Frequently Asked Questions

Why are your assist stats different to other websites?

Assist statistics vary depending on the source because there is no official universal definition of an assist. We use the Opta definition, which is also used by competitions and websites such as the Premier League, La Liga, BBC, WhoScored and SofaScore.

Other sites such as Transfermarkt include additional events like penalties won, rebounds and own-goal assists, resulting in higher assist totals.

Throughout this website we keep our statistics aligned with Opta's methodology to ensure consistency across all competitions.

What exactly is an Opta assist?

According to Opta , an assist is the final touch that directly leads to a teammate scoring a goal.

If the pass is heavily deflected, the assist is only awarded if the intended teammate would likely have received the ball anyway.

Own goals, directly scored free kicks, direct corner goals and penalties do not receive assists under Opta's rules.

Why are MLS assist numbers different?

Major League Soccer (MLS) uses a different assist system from most football competitions. Although MLS uses Opta data, it also awards secondary assists, often called pre-assists.

These are passes made to the eventual assister that are judged to be instrumental in creating the goal. Because of this, Messi's MLS assist totals can appear higher than those shown elsewhere.

Throughout this website we use the standard Opta assist definitionto keep statistics consistent across every competition.

How many trophies have Messi and Ronaldo won?

Trophy totals often differ between websites because some sources count Super Cups in which the player didn't appear, while others exclude youth competitions or Olympic medals.

Including every official senior trophy plus Messi's youth honors, Lionel Messi has won 48 trophies, while Cristiano Ronaldo has won 37.

If Messi's Olympic Gold Medal and FIFA U-20 World Cup are excluded, his total becomes 46 trophies. This is why different sources often display different career totals.

Where do your performance statistics come from?

Performance metrics such as shots, key passes, successful dribbles, aerial duels, and other advanced statistics are collected from trusted sources that use Opta as their data provider.

These include websites such as WhoScored, SofaScore, and FotMob. Statistics are updated after every match and may be adjusted following Opta's post-match review process.

Using the same provider across all competitions ensures consistency and fairnesswhen comparing Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Why do goal totals differ between websites?

Career goal totals can vary because different websites use different counting methods. Some sources include unofficial matches, exhibition games, Olympic goals, youth football or regional competitions, while others count only official senior competitive matches.

Organizations such as the IFFHS, RSSSF, and individual football federations may also apply slightly different historical criteria, particularly for older competitions where records are incomplete.

Throughout Goat Arena, we use a single, consistent methodologybased on official senior competitive matches, ensuring every Messi and Ronaldo comparison is fair, transparent and directly comparable.

Do you count friendly matches in career statistics?

Yes — but only official FIFA-recognized international friendliesplayed for the senior national team are included in our statistics.

We do not includeclub friendlies, pre-season tours, exhibition matches, testimonial games or unofficial fixtures, as these are not considered part of a player's official competitive career.

Throughout Goat Arena, we use official senior competitive matches, along with official international friendlies where appropriate, to ensure every comparison between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldoremains accurate and consistent.

How often are the statistics updated?

Our database is updated after every official matchplayed by Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, including club and international competitions.

Occasionally, Optaand official competition organisers may revise goals, assists or other match events following post-match reviews. When this happens, our statistics are updated to reflect the corrected data.

Throughout Goat Arena, we aim to provide the most accurate and up-to-date statistics possible, using trusted data providers and official competition records.

Why do Ballon d'Or totals sometimes differ?

Ballon d'Or records can differ between websites because the award has changed format several timesthroughout its history. Between 2010 and 2015, the FIFA Ballon d'Ormerged the traditional Ballon d'Or with the FIFA World Player of the Year award before reverting back to its original format in 2016.

Some websites separate these awards into different categories, while others combine every edition into a single Ballon d'Or total, which can lead to confusion when comparing players.

Throughout Goat Arena, we follow the official Ballon d'Or record, treating every recognised Ballon d'Or title as part of the player's career total to ensure consistency across all comparisons.

How are hat-tricks counted?

A hat-trick is awarded when a player scores three or more goalsin a single official match. Four-goal and five-goal performances are also counted as hat-tricks.

Goals scored during a penalty shootoutafter extra time are not included, as they are used only to determine the winner and are not counted as official match goals.

Throughout Goat Arena, every hat-trick is calculated using official senior competitive matches, ensuring fair and consistent comparisons between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

What is considered an official match?

Throughout this website, we only count official senior competitive and recognized international matches. This includes league games, domestic cups, continental competitions, FIFA tournaments, and officially recognized international fixtures.

We also include officially sanctioned international friendlies, as they are recognized by FIFA and national football associations and contribute to players' official career statistics.

Exhibition matches, charity games, testimonial matches, youth fixtures, reserve games, and unofficial club friendlies are not included, ensuring every statistic on Goat Arena is based on officially recognized senior appearances.

Why are some records marked as 'Shared'?

Some football records are held by more than one player. When multiple players have achieved the exact same record, we label it as Shared.

For example, if two players have both scored the same number of goals in a competition, or both reached a milestone first, neither player is considered the sole record holder until someone surpasses that total.

We display shared records to provide accurate historical contextand avoid giving exclusive credit where the achievement is officially held by multiple players.

How do you verify historical statistics?

Historical football data is collected from multiple trusted sources, including official competition records, federation archives, Opta, FIFA, UEFA and well-established statistical databases.

When different sources publish conflicting numbers, we compare the original match reports and official records before updating our database. Statistics are only changed when there is strong supporting evidence.

Our aim is to provide the most accurate and consistently verifiedcareer statistics for both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Why are World Cup assist totals different across sources?

World Cup assist totals vary because different organizations use different assist definitions. FIFA, Opta and other statistical providers do not always award assists in exactly the same situations.

Some databases count rebounds, penalties won or heavily deflected passes, while others only record the final intentional passthat directly leads to a goal.

Throughout Goat Arena we use Opta's official assist methodologyto ensure every World Cup statistic is measured consistently across both players.

Do penalty shootout goals count in career totals?

No. Goals scored during a penalty shootoutare not counted as official goals in a player's career statistics.

Shootout penalties are only used to determine the winner of a knockout match and are recorded separately from goals scored during normal time or extra time.

Throughout Goat Arena, only goals scored during regulation time or extra timeare included in each player's official career goal tally.

What is the difference between club and international records?

Club recordsinclude matches played for professional clubs in domestic leagues, domestic cups, continental competitions and other official club tournaments.

International recordsonly include appearances and statistics for a player's senior national team in official competitions and recognized international friendlies.

On Goat Arena we display club, international and combined career statisticsseparately, making it easier to compare each part of Lionel Messi's and Cristiano Ronaldo's careers.

How do you define a key pass or chance created?

A key passis any pass that directly leads to a teammate taking a shot, regardless of whether the shot results in a goal.

A chance createdrefers to the same statistic under Opta's terminology, measuring how often a player creates shooting opportunities for teammates.

Throughout Goat Arena we use Opta's official definitionsfor key passes and chances created, ensuring both Lionel Messi's and Cristiano Ronaldo's creative statistics are measured consistently across every competition.

Why are dribble numbers different from YouTube compilations?

YouTube compilations are created manually and often count every attempted move, including stepovers, failed take-ons or actions that don't meet the statistical definition of a dribble.

Professional data providers such as Optaonly record a successful dribblewhen a player deliberately beats an opponent while keeping possession of the ball.

Because Goat Arena uses official Opta event data, our dribble totals may differ from fan-made videos or social media claims, but they remain consistent and independently verified.

Can records change after matches are reviewed?

Yes. Official records can occasionally change after a match if governing bodies or data providersreview an incident and update the statistics.

Goals, assists, own goals and disciplinary decisions may be corrected after detailed video analysis, ensuring the official record accurately reflects what happened on the pitch.

Goat Arena follows the latest verified official records, so our statistics are updated whenever an official correction is made.

How do you compare players from different eras?

Comparing footballers from different generations is challenging because rules, tactics, fitness levels and competition formatshave changed significantly over time.

Rather than relying on a single statistic, Goat Arena considers achievements, consistency, longevity, individual awards and performance datato provide a broader picture of a player's career.

While statistics help inform the discussion, era comparisons will always involve some interpretation, which is why we present the data and let fans draw their own conclusions.
